The story behind RePic RePic

I was sick of every image viewer,
so I built my own

Let me be honest: every image viewer I've tried has let me down.

Windows Photos takes forever to open a single image. Third-party viewers either look like they're from 2005, charge a subscription, or stuff in features nobody asked for.

I'm a developer who works with images every day. One day I finally snapped and decided to build my own.

That's how RePic was born.

Virtual Albums — the feature that blew my own mind

While building RePic, I stumbled onto a feature that even surprised me — Virtual Albums.

Here's how it works: you see an image on Twitter that you like. You drag it into RePic.

RePic doesn't download that image. It just remembers the URL, stored in memory.

You drag 1,000 images into an album. Disk usage?

0 KB

Not "very small". Literally zero. The images aren't on your computer — only URLs exist in memory. But open the album and every image loads instantly. You can crop and annotate them too.

I couldn't believe it myself when I realized what I'd built.

.repic files — want real files? You got it

The one downside of virtual albums: they live inside the app. You can't see them in File Explorer. If you want tangible files you can see, share, and back up, RePic lets you "pin" an album to disk.

Pinning creates a .repic file for each image — a tiny JSON shortcut under 1 KB. Visible in File Explorer, shareable with others, easy to back up. Double-click to open directly in RePic.

You can even upload local images to the cloud, then convert them to .repic files. A 5 MB photo becomes a 0.5 KB shortcut — 99.99% space savings.

Want zero space? Use virtual albums. Want real files? Pin to .repic. Your choice.

More than just virtual albums

Of course, RePic isn't only about virtual albums:

Open source, free, forever

RePic is completely open source and free.

No ads, no data collection, no subscriptions. Ever. This is a tool I built for myself and decided to share with anyone who has the same frustrations.

If you like it, a Star on GitHub is the biggest support you can give.
